The Ron Benner and Jamelie Hassan Collection
The Unity Project is thrilled to welcome the donation of more than 40 works of art from the private collection of artists Ron Benner and Jamelie Hassan. The collection, gathered over four decades, includes a rich list of contemporary Canadian and international artists. Benner and Hassan have also donated their own, original works for UPwithART raffle and they also donated the Clark McDougall, Burke’s Barn door prize.
“The UPwithART fundraiser appeals to our activism,” says Jamelie Hassan. “The Unity Project’s mandate is a compassionate one which addresses inequalities in our community and the urgent issue of homelessness in our city. UPwithART is a brilliant example of the spirit of creativity and generosity—which defines the London we so admire.”

Born and raised in London, Ron Benner and Jamelie Hassan are well known for their art and activism. Each has received numerous and prestigious awards and exhibited internationally. They have a long standing history with, and love for, London’s neighbourhoods. Both artists were and are active in artist-run centres, including Forest City Gallery, since 1973, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. They were also among the founding members of the Embassy Cultural House (1983 – 1990), a unique cultural centre within the former Embassy Hotel, which stood across the street from the Unity Project site.
The Framing and Art Centre has framed most of the pieces in the collection, where they weren’t framed already and Canadian Auto Workers Local 27 has sponsored the exhibit to make it possible for us all to view some great art through the lens of this dynamic artist couple.
