Artist Bio:
George Kubresli is a Syrian Canadian artist, born in 1990. He graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Damascus University in 2013, with a specialization in drawing and oil painting. The difficulties of war in his homeland, Syria, resulted in his move to Canada in 2016. He pursued a Master’s degree in Visual Arts from Western University, graduating in 2020. His primary focus as an artist is on drawing and painting, though he works in the fields of performance and installation, as well. George’s art practice draws mainly upon on his own imagination, philosophical musings, and sociological experiences. He is driven by a desire to depict human tragedy and suffering. Kubresli has participated in several art exhibitions in his brief career: Arthum Beirut, 2013; Waha Geneva, 2015; and Hiding in Plain Sight, a virtual exhibition, London, ON, in 2020.
Artist Statement:
“We cannot fully see tragedy through physical form alone. To access a true experience of horror, we must understand what humans suffer so deeply, and link those personal sufferings with what is externalized.”
