“A vibrant and healthy community requires that all members contribute equally to its cultural makeup.” says Jeremy Jeresky – Creative Director, The New School of Colour
A happy marriage of arts and culture with social services are on display where Unity Project residents and New School of Colour artists showcase their work on equal footing with some of Canada’s most celebrated artists.
UPwithART was first mounted in 2005 and again in 2007 to celebrate the many artists among Unity Project residents, staff, volunteers and founding members. In 2011, Jeremy Jeresky’s New School of Colour came on the scene, with free art workshops and creative social space in the basement of the Ark Aid Mission across the street from Unity Project. Finally, a friendly, accessible neighbourhood resource to help individuals experiencing poverty to make great art.
New School of Colour offers free workshops, resources and creative special space, with a special focus on providing opportunities to youth and adults dealing with issues of poverty, mental health and other social barriers.
“Many at our shelter find solace in a drawing pad,” says Silvia Langer Unity Project’s Development Director. “UPwithART has a profound impact on Unity Project’s participants.”
