Oswaldo De León Kantule, or “Achu”, is a visual artist from the Guna nation of Panama. After winning Panama´s National Painting Competition in 1996, he graduated with a Fine Arts degree. He has shown his work in many countries in the Americas and Europe. He has lived in London, Ontario since 2002. He finds inspiration for his art in Guna cosmovision, including ancestral symbols and elements of Guna oral history. He uses symbols and visual metaphors to comment on contemporary issues such as intolerance, racism and environmental destruction. His work contains principles of Guna art: duality, repetition and multi-dimensionality.
