Artist Bio:

Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Gary Spearin studied art at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, BFA 1981 and University of Guelph, MFA 1997. He has been recipient of numerous awards including Canada Council grants, Ontario Arts Council grants, and public commissions. Spearin has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions and residencies within Canada as well Europe and United States. Spearin’s paintings and installations are included in public and private collections, including The Canada Council Art Bank, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Art Gallery of Hamilton, Museum London, Kelowna Art Gallery, Woodstock Art Gallery, Robert McLaughlin Gallery.

Artist Statement:

Global Warnings, is as series of paintings creating a diminishing image of the arctic environment. Sun Shower, marks the unknowns of the planet’s changing environment through ‘melting’ the iconic Lawren Harris, Icebergs, Davis Strait, 1930 painting. In this study, a rigorous painting system emulates the original painting then reforms the wet paint with strategies of chance and change to suggest measure and visibility to climate change.
