Artist Statement:

“Blur” — from Stebbins’ 2019 exhibition Oblivion Souvenirs — depicts two children at play, with the child on the right obscured by motion blur. The artist’s process fuses the immediacy of mobile photography with the slow art of quilting: Stebbins has reconstructed a candid digital snapshot piece-by-piece from hundreds of scans of textiles (mostly the clothing of the artist’s family). The figures are rendered simultaneously familiar yet indistinct, as if floating on the cusp of memory. Not only is blur a result of the camera’s failure to capture motion, but also of the mind’s struggle to capture the passing of time.
