Artist Statement:

Roly Fenwick is well-known for his lush oil and loose watercolour paintings. His inspiration is drawn from the Bruce Peninsula, which Fenwick refers to as his “ancestral bloodroots”. He frequently migrates to his cottage in Big Bay to produce drawings, sketches and small paintings of the landscape. The small paintings of swamps, marshes, fields and forests are then used as reference material for his larger works. Fenwick explains that his “interest in not in scenery but in probing to reveal the forces beneath the veneer”. His oil paintings thoroughly reflect this interest in revealing the sources of nature. The viewer is continually drawn in and can feel the lushness and spirit of the Canadian landscape.
