Born and raised in London, Ontario, Aidan Urquhart was educated at the University of Western Ontario and Fanshawe College in studio and art theory. He has been exhibiting since the early 1990s. Fascinated by the dynamics of communication, Urquhart is recognized both fondly and with irritation for his numerous national and international mail-art and FaxArt projects. He has completed residencies at the McIntosh Gallery, University of Western Ontario and the Banff Centre for the Arts, and his work can be found in numerous public and private collections.
This series of works that go under the title of ‘Planet Poems’, is my experiment on visually capturing the infinite unknown that exists when looking up into the night sky. Like most people, I too am fascinated by the planets and stars that inhabit our solar system and beyond. They exist like the ground beneath us and the air we breathe but they still remain a mystery that has fueled our curiosity since the dawn of time. These mixed media works on paper are not exact scientific replicas of specific planets that exist, but are rather versions of the infinite possibilities of what might exist when you let your mind roam free and unencumbered.
